Department of Folk Arts works for the development and promotion of various kinds of folk art in Nepal. It conducts research to find different kinds of folk arts across Nepal. Many artists in rural areas might have been practicing folk arts for generations but might not have been known to wider audience and viewers. Documenting the findings of the research and dissemination of the information through publication makes our folk arts known to the world. Folk arts not only have aesthetic values but also pragmatic values. The skills, techniques and traditions of folk arts are passed from old generation to new generation without any institutional trainings. Thus, they are existing even now. Some traditions of folk art are getting lost due to various reasons. One of our objectives is to preserve them by supporting the folk artists. Another challenge is to make folk arts adaptable to our context. Headed by one of the Members of Academic Council, the department is dedicated for the upliftment of folk art and folk artists of Nepal.
